Environmental Sustainability Action Group
The Environmental Sustainability Action Group operates as an Extra Curricular Activity but also carry out projects beyond classroom time. The group has been inspired by a Nexus-Approach to problem solving, which includes Food, Water and Energy usage. Pupils are also inspired by a Circular Economy approach, which aims to reduce the consumption of resources, re-use them and recycle them while attempting to minimise waste. We aim to turn any waste back into wealth and return its value.
Projects so far have included:
- A Sustainability Day - created and hosted by Secondary pupils for Prep pupils to consider the concept of sustainability. Enough, for everyone, forever (Samuel Alexander).
- The start of small-scale composting of vegetable and fruit peel from kitchen waste.
- Growing some vegetables such as lettuce, lemon grass and beefsteak plant for consumption in the canteen.
- Considering the expansion of rainwater collection systems (of which one already exists on the Gym roof)
- Measuring, monitoring and considering the reduction of paper waste from printers. With student initiatives on how to reduce, re-use and then recycle.
- Signage around school to reduce water usage (in bathrooms), paper usage (next to staff printers) and consider food waste (self-service in the canteen for rice and salads) plus signage related to food waste.
- Other ideas have included changing taps and removing plastic bottles from sale in the canteen.
